Labette Health | Winter 2020

The anesthesiologist was the best and very compassionate with me the whole entire time. He kept making sure I was doing OK and kept talking with me until they were able to get Matt in with me. The nurses were a breath of fresh air and helped lighten the room to ease my tension, as I was very scared for what was getting ready to happen. Once they got Matt in the room and situated by me and Dr. Olmstead came in and the process began, I definitely was at ease. The doctor talked to me the whole entire time and explained everything she was doing and kept making sure I was still doing OK. To say that Dr. Olmstead is a great doctor is an understatement—she is amazing at what she does and is so compassionate to her patients! Once Koleman arrived and we got moved into our room, our experience at Labette Health was still nothing short of amazing! The nurses exceeded every expectation I ever had. The nurses just make you feel so much more relaxed and give you huge peace of mind when you’re trying to figure this new baby/new-mom life thing out. Then on top of all this, just having a lactation specialist available was so great! Being a new mom and having no clue about anything and just having those resources available all right there was so relieving to help guide me through that first-time mom process. Labette Health’s new birthing center is coming to life on the drawing board. The center will include a labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suite; two traditional labor and delivery suites; a triage room; an operating room suite; and four private postpartum suites. Each suite will feature a large, private bathroom, personal sink and vanity, television, and a sleeper love seat so that the support person can stay overnight. When it’s time for delivery, the suite can be converted within seconds into a delivery room with cutting-edge technology and equipment. The suites will allow the mother to labor, deliver and recover all within the same spacious suite—improving efficiency, comfort and the overall patient experience by providing a homelike atmosphere. It takes a village “Our OB team is dedicated to providing exceptional routine care of the obstetrical patient,” says Sharon Roberts, RN, obstetrics/nursery director. “We are committed to nurturing the patient, baby and family.” It takes a village to raise a child, and Labette Health sought a village’s worth of input to be involved with the design of the new center. Dozens of doctors, nurses, patients and others have all been invited to share their thoughts for the future center. “As Labette Health continues to grow our obstetrical services, we want our new mothers and their families to feel comfortable, as well as cared for. Our experienced labor and delivery team work diligently to ensure all their medical needs are met and surpassed, and we want to make sure the physical environment reflects our clinical commitment,” says Brian Williams, President and CEO.
